چکیده

Problems in logic are well-known to be hard to solve in the worst case. Twodi erent strategies for dealing with this aspect are known from the literature:language restriction and theory approximation. In this paper we are concerned with the second strategy. Our main goalis to de ne a semantically well-founded logic for approximate reasoning, whichis justi able from the intuitive point of view, and to provide fast algorithmsfor dealing with it even when using expressive languages. We also want ourlogic to be useful to perform approximate reasoning in di erent contexts. Wede ne a method for the approximation of decision reasoning problems basedon multivalued logics. Our work expands and generalizes in several directionsideas presented by other researchers. The major features of our technique are:1) approximate answers give semantically clear information about the problemat hand; 2) approximate answers are easier to compute than answers to theoriginal problem; 3) approximate answers can be improved, and eventually theyconverge to the right answer; 4) both sound approximations and complete onesare described. The method we propose is exible enough to be applied to a wide range of rea-soning problems. In our research we considered approximation of several decid-able problems with di erent worst-case complexity, involving both propositionaland rst-order languages. In particular we de ned approximation techniques for:propositional logic, fragments of rst order logic (concept description languages)and modal logic. In our research we also addressed the issue of representing theknowledge of a reasoner with limited resources and how to use such a knowledgefor approximate reasoning purposes.2

Soundness Preserving Approximation for TBox Reasoning

Large scale ontology applications require efficient and robust description logic (DL) reasoning services. Expressive DLs usually have very high worst case complexity while tractable DLs are restricted in terms of expressive power. This brings a new challenge: can users use expressive DLs to build their ontologies and still enjoy the efficient services as in tractable languages. In this paper, w...

Toward Efficient Default Reasoning

2 Activities and Findings Our objective was to study a novel, approximation-based, approach to tractable nonmonotonic reasoning. Despite the critical role of nonmonotonicity in most human reasoning tasks, current nonmonotonic reasoning formalisms are inherently undecidable in the general case, and are intractable in all but the most restrictive cases. To address this intractability, we combined...

SROIQ Syntax Approximation by Using Nominal Schemas

Nominal schemas is a recently introduced extension of description logics which makes it possible to express rules which generalize DL-safe ones. A tractable description logic, ELROVn, has been identified. This leads us to the question: can we improve approximate reasoning results by employing nominal schemas? In this paper, we investigate how to approximately cast SROIQ into ELROVn. Using a dat...

PROPERTY ANALYSIS OF TRIPLE IMPLICATION METHOD FOR APPROXIMATE REASONING ON ATANASSOVS INTUITIONISTIC FUZZY SETS

Firstly, two kinds of natural distances between intuitionistic fuzzy sets are generated by the classical natural distance between fuzzy sets under a unified framework of residual intuitionistic implication operators. Secondly, the continuity and approximation property of a method for solving intuitionistic fuzzy reasoning are defined. It is proved that the triple implication method for intuitio...

The universe of propositional approximations

The idea of approximate entailment has been proposed by Schaerf and Cadoli [Tractable reasoning via approximation, Artif. Intell. 74(2) (1995) 249–310] as a way of modelling the reasoning of an agent with limited resources. In that framework, a family of logics, parameterised by a set of propositional letters, approximates classical logic as the size of the set increases. The original proposal ...
